High quality switch mode step-up/step-down DC Converters

The high efficiency of these converters allows a compact size for the amp output, and lower heat generation (a product of inefficiency). DC Converter Applications

Military and heavy equipment applications may use DC converters in a 24 volt DC system to provide a regulated, stable DC voltage source for 12 volt DC electronic devices such as radios, computers, data loggers, sound equipment, lights, etc. Marine systems in 24 volts can use DC converters for sonar, radar, instrumentation, computers, stereos, etc. Buses and heavy trucks with 24 volt systems are also appropriate uses for converters. Simply taking 12 volts from one of the 12 volt batteries in a 24 volt series string can imbalance the batteries and cause the other battery to be overcharged. The charging system sees the combined voltage of the batteries, and supplies amps to raise the voltage to the fully charged level, which may be some time after the untapped battery is fully charged. The SEC boost models (step-up) allow using 24 volt military communications and related gear in a 12 volt vehicle application.

We now have the Model 670 and 679 Taxi radio boosters, which boost a 12 volt input to 16 volts, for maximum radio tranceiver performance, without subjecting the entire vehicle electrical system to an elevated voltage.

A converter is an electronically controlled device that pulls equally from the parent DC voltage and supplies a precise, regulated voltage in the desired output amp range. They usually can tolerate a fairly wide input voltage, allowing for battery pack discharge, and charging system voltage variance.
