Marine battery chargers come in a variety of models, with one or more attributes
contributing to their being classified as such. Some of the attributes are:
•Waterproof
•Vibration proof
•Mountable (mounting flanges)
•Multiple bank (multiple outputs)
and others. Applications vary from single starting battery systems, to multi-battery
systems, where some of the batteries are deeply discharged routinely, as in a
trolling motor system in a tournament fishing boat, or an electric-only boat used
in smaller lakes or ponds. Some marine applications are
live aboard situations, where shore power is available, and the charger may need
to function as a power supply as well. We can take care of all of this, and more,
with a quality charger that provides proper management and maximum
battery life.
We carry marine chargers from Dual Pro (Charging Systems International). Dual Pro was recently selected by Charles Marine to be marketed as their units for bass boats and similar sized marine applications. The Dual Pro marine units are fully potted inside, and are waterproof, vibration proof, mountable, and available in multibank output units up to four banks. They feature LED readouts to indicate charge status, temperature compensation for accurate battery charging, ignition protection, a three year warranty, and available with a true gel profile microprocessor. The Dual Pro battery chargers (except the Lil Pro units) shut off after completion of the charge cycle, and the microprocessor monitors the battery, initiating a new charge cycle if the system voltage requires it. Some engineers choose this charge method to minimize fluid loss in flooded batteries.
The Dual Pro Lil Pro series are 4 amp per bank marine chargers, available in single, dual, and three bank models, and have a float mode as the third stage as opposed to the shut-off and monitoring. The XL series are 6 amp per bank units, having a little more charge value than the Lil Pro series. Both series are relatively light and are appropriate for smaller marine battery systems, or low use situations. We like these for generator starting battery maintenance particularly, for single (12 volt) or dual (24 volt) setups, because of the mounting, waterproof, and vibration proof features. The Dual Pro Sportsman series chargers are 10 amps per bank, and available in single bank, dual bank, three bank, and four bank models. These are used in bass boats and similar battery setups, as well as industrial applications using multiple batteries in a series, parallel, or separate battery function situation. The Dual Pro Pro series marine battery chargers are 15 amps per bank, and available in single, dual, and three bank models. The Pro series are used in heavy usage applications, and by tournament fishemen quite frequently. The different Dual Pro models are used in military and emergency vehicle applications, where a reliable, vibration proof, usually multiple output battery charger can be mounted on the rig, and provide battery maintenance when the vehicle is stationary, so the rig is always ready to go.
All the Dual Pro units have independent 12 volt outputs, meaning a separate positive and negative connection for each bank, and a microprocessor for each bank. This allows batteries of differing type, size, and state of charge to be connected to the same battery charger. So, a three bank charger can be used for a single 12 volt starting battery, and two other 12 volt batteries in series for a 24 volt trolling motor. How the batteries are wired (i.e. series in this 24 volt situation) is not a concern for the charger, after each battery gets its own positive and negative from the charger. This attribute can be used to solve a battery charging problem involving higher voltages like 24 or 36 volts, where one of the 12 volt batteries in the string is tapped at 12 volts for lights, radio, etc., resulting in an imbalance. Using a straight 24 volt or 36 volt output charger in this case would result in improper battery charging, and shortened battery life.
We carry Samlex battery chargers for some marine applications. They are not waterproof units, so their use is limited to larger marine craft with cabins or compartments to keep the chargers from direct contact with water. However, they have some features which make them very suitable as a marine charger in some applications. The Samlex units are mountable, and switch selectable for power supply type operation (battery with load), and switch selectable for true Gel batteries. Some are user selectable for 230 volt input as well. These are handy in marine applications where there is a constant load on the batteries, like a live aboard situation with shore power. There are 12 volt models in 15, 30, and 45 amps, and 24 volt models in 15 and 25 amps.
So, take a look at our offerings if you are looking for a marine battery charger, or have an application where some of the attributes these chargers offer would be appropriate. Call our tech line or email if you have any questions. We only carry quality, reliable products that will do the job if properly selected. We also try to offer very competitive pricing, if not the lowest pricing on the Web, for the products we carry.
