Dual Pro Lil Pro 2 Gel Battery Charger

The Dual Pro Lil Pro 2 gel battery charger is one of the newer entries in the Dual Pro line of quality marine battery chargers. This model of the waterproof Lil Pro series is a 4 amp per bank, 12 volt independent output, temperature compensating battery charger, with a true gel charge profile. The independent bank battery chargers have a separate positive and negative connector for each bank, and a separate microprocessor which controls the charging algorithm of its bank. This means that the batteries charged may be of differing age, size, or state of charge. This works well in applications like a small boat with a starting battery and a trolling motor battery (or batteries). It also works for series strings of two 12 volt batteries for 24 volts (the Lil Pro 2), or three 12 volt batteries in a 36 volt series (the Lil Pro 3). After each battery has its own connection, the charger does not care if they are parallelled for higher amps, or series connected for higher voltages. This is especially useful in higher voltage situations like 24 volt applications where one of the 12 volt batteries in the string is supplying some 12 volt loads (like lights, radar, etc.), and the batteries end up imbalanced. A straight output 24 volt charger used in this situation would not properly charge the batteries and correct the imbalance.

The Lil Pro 2 two output 4 amp battery charger is appropriate for 12 volt or 24 volt applications (two 12 volt batteries in series) where wet or harsh environments may be encountered. They have flanges for mounting for permanent installation, and will tolerate water, vibration, and temperature. They are used in marine applications, like boats with a starting battery and a trolling motor battery, or two 12 volt batteries in parallel, or two 12 volt batteries in series for a 24 volt trolling motor. When used for a trolling motor application, we recommend batteries up to about 50 amp hours with the Lil Pro 2. The 80 to 110 amp hour setups should use a 10 amp per bank or 15 amp per bank charger. The Lil Pro can be used as maintenance chargers for larger capacity batteries or systems. We like the size and amperage of the Lil Pro chargers for standby pump and generator applications, as they are mountable, waterproof, and vibration proof, and this model is very suitable for generators with 24 volt starting systems, such as the FEMA units being widely instituted.

The Dual Pro chargers shut off completely when the battery is fully charged, and monitor the system voltage, initiating a charge sequence if appropriate. Some engineers prefer this charging method to decrease electrolyte or water loss.
